Abstract:
Craniofacial changes in adults with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia major remain important for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This exploratory observational study included 34 adult patients, 16 men and 18 women, who underwent combined anthropometric and cephalometric assessment. Anthropometric analysis included proportional indices of the head, face, mandibular region, lips, and mouth and was performed separately by sex. Cephalometric analysis was performed in the same patient cohort and compared with 35 healthy individuals with neutral occlusion. Data distribution was assessed before statistical testing, and parametric or nonparametric methods were applied as appropriate. Patients demonstrated altered craniofacial proportions, especially in the mandibular region, together with cephalometric features suggesting skeletal Class II tendency, vertical growth direction, posterior mandibular rotation, altered incisor inclination, and a more protrusive lip profile. The findings should be interpreted cautiously because of the exploratory design.
