Annotation The article presents literature data on prolactin and its impact on the reproductive potential of women. In a woman's body prolactin performs diverse biological functions, exerting a huge influence on the condition of the reproductive system, the processes of implantation and development of pregnancy, as well as playing a crucial role in postnatal lactation. This hormone is essential for the full maturation of ovarian follicles and oocytes, the normal function of the corpus luteum, to maintain the balance between the estrogen receptor and luteinizing hormone. Prolactin has a direct or indirect metabolic effect on all types of tissues. Therefore, even a slight increase in prolactin level in serum may be the cause of osteopenic States, insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, which adversely affects the metabolic processes, and requires appropriate therapy aimed at reducing its concentration in the blood serum. The prevalence of pathological hyperprolactinemia in the General population is about 1%. There are a number of physiological factors that lead to hyperprolactinemia. Hyperprolactinemia is an adaptive response of the organism to chronic stress, which may be different pathological processes in reproductive and endocrine system, leading to different metabolic and hormonal disorders. Currently the role of stress in the formation of hyperprolactinemia, when strong negative and positive emotions, especially in puberty, can cause stress-induced hyperprolactinemia and anovulation. This problem is particularly relevant in endocrinology and gynecology, however, there are a variety of approaches to the study of various forms of hyperprolactinemia – neoplastic and nonneoplastic origin. A study of these issues, the creation of algorithms for management of patients with the syndrome of hyperprolactinemia of various origin and their therapy are the important areas of clinical research.
